August 2012 Happenings

Greetings AHSA Members and Friends!

This will be a shortened version of our usual monthly 'Happenings' as it's already the end of the month!  Where does the time go?  Our programs have been busy with calling staff back to work and pre-service training, getting families registered and starting classes and home visits!  There's so much to do at this time of year, but it's all good - it's what we are all about!

We had a great quarterly meeting and training in Prescott last week with many of our programs participating, despite their heavy schedules back home.  We began with a great training provided by Laura Landis, 'Enhancing School Readiness Through Effective Family Engagement' which brought together all content areas for a collaborative approach to the concept of ...family engagement is everybody's business!  In the afternoon, we had another lively training from the Center for Disease Control on the topic of 'Let's Move Child Care' which is so compatible with Head Start and the DHS Empower Pack that all of our programs use.  It was a terrific day of cross component learning!  The next day, our General Membership Meeting and Committee Meetings were full of information.  We heard from two of our own programs, SWHD and CPLC, about innovative practices as well as new information from the Department of Education on student identification numbers and the progress we are all making with collecting and reporting data.  Lastly, our Board Meeting concluded the week with the AHSA Committees reporting their activities, ranging from the Mental Health Symposium, Parent Leadership Institute, planning for a Health Institute, progress on using Teaching Strategies Gold and more!  We hope you can join us in November for our next meeting.  Until then, have a great start to a new school year!

Get Well Soon!

Many of you know Mary Reinwasser, the Region IX ECE Manager/Arizona ECE Manager.  Together with Laura Landis, Mary provides Arizona Head Start programs with their T/TA assistance.  Mary has been experiencing some health challenges this summer and has been out of the office for several weeks.  Mary will continue to take some time off to focus on getting well.

Join us in wishing Mary a speedy recovery!

Get Well Soon Mary!

Oral Health Resources on the Website!

As early childhood and Head Start programs are beginning to focus more on Oral Health, we recently had an opportunity through the Office of Head Start to bring some resources here to Arizona.  Be sure to look on our website for messages specifically targeted to parents, early childhood staff and dental providers

In addition to these resources, we are in the process of distributing a new educational DVD to all of our programs throughout the state.  Eventually, they will be able to share these with their community partners so that we can improve oral health for ALL young children throughout the state.

Did you know that all children should have their first visit to the dentist by age 1?

View these resources here.

CLASS Training - Instructional Support

As a result of the May 2012 AHSA Training on CLASS Instructional Support - a huge success - a group of partners got together and decided to create a 'road show' to disseminate this information to a broader audience around the state.  Instructional Support is an area that many programs can benefit from.  More and more programs including Head Start and FTF Quality First programs are now using CLASS to improve interactions with children.

A collaborative effort with Arizona's Head Start T/TA System, AHSA, First Things First - Quality First, ADE-ECE and Arizona Child Care Association (ACCA) worked together to plan these trainings.

CLASS Trainings - Instructional Support - click for flyer with communities and dates.  *Note - Show Low, Flagstaff and Kayenta have been temporarily postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

AHSA is handling all registrations through our website, charging $30 with each recipient getting lunch and a pre-loaded flashdrive with all training materials to conduct the same training in their own communities with their staff and partners.  So far, we've implemented two of these trainings, in Littleton and Chandler and they have been very successful.  If all goes well, look for more of these as the year progresses.  Register here
